A valve sealant specification should state the role, the service medium, the temperature range, the seat materials, the injection system and the packaging, in plain words. It should ask for a non-hardening sealant where the service is dry gas or long closure is expected. Describe the valve and its duty, and let the supplier match the product.
Writing a valve sealant specification: the wording that gets the right product
The wording of your valve sealant specification decides which product arrives.
1. What a complete specification states
A specification is a short written duty statement. It tells a supplier what the sealant must do. The supplier can then match a product to the valve. A vague request tends to bring a vague product.
A complete specification states seven things:
- The role: sealing, lubricating or cleaning.
- The service medium the valve handles.
- The temperature range, normal band and extremes.
- The seat and seal materials inside the valve.
- The injection system: fittings, gun and pressure limits.
- Whether the sealant must stay non-hardening in service.
- The packaging your team can use on site.
We take each element in turn below. For the wider purchase journey, see our valve sealant buying guide.
2. Start with the role and the medium
Open the specification with the role. Write seal a passing seat, lubricate a stiff valve or clean deposits before sealing. Each phrase routes to a different product family. A request that only says valve grease leaves the supplier guessing.
Then name the service medium in plain words. Dry natural gas, wet gas with condensate, sour crude and produced water differ sharply. Each one steers the formulation a different way. Add anything the medium carries, such as sand or scale.
If the gas is dry, say so plainly. That single word changes which sealant chemistry suits the valve, as later sections explain. Our article on the data an engineer needs to recommend a valve sealant expands the list.
3. Temperature range and seat materials
State the temperature range in two parts. Give the normal operating band, then the highest and lowest the valve sees. Include short excursions, such as startup or regeneration, and name your units. A sealant that suits the normal band may fail at the extremes.
Seat materials belong in the same clause. Write metal seats, soft seats, or the polymer name if you know it. Softer seats can swell or degrade with the wrong cleaner or base. Sealant choice and cleaner choice therefore share one compatibility picture.
For depth on each factor, see selecting sealant for temperature service. Our notes on sealant selection by seat design and service medium cover the combinations.
4. Describe the injection system and its limits
The specification should also describe the injection system. Write the fitting type, such as buttonhead fittings on stem and seat ports. Write which gun or pump will drive the product. The supplier can then match consistency to equipment.
Pressure limits deserve their own sentence. Industry safety practice keeps stem-fitting injection to 3,000 psi for buttonhead fittings. Limits vary by fitting, valve and site, so follow the equipment and fitting ratings. Where OEM documents exist, consult them for limits and warranty terms.
Injection also has gates, and the specification should respect them. The fittings must be in good condition. The valve design and the service must suit injection. Site rules and the permit-to-work must allow the job. Valves built with injection points are designed to be maintained in service. In-service treatment is not possible on every valve.
Our high pressure injection equipment pages list the guns, pumps and fittings we supply.
5. Non-hardening and packaging clauses
Two short clauses prevent common problems. The first concerns hardening. Organic sealants can harden in dry gas and seize valves, a recognised industry failure mode. Where the valve sees dry gas, write non-hardening sealant required into the text. Do the same where the valve may sit closed for long periods.
The second clause covers packaging. Write what your team can use on site: cartridges that fit your gun, or larger containers for pump work. This keeps the delivery usable without a follow-on order. It also tells the supplier how the product will reach the valve.
6. From specification to the right product
When the wording is ready, send it to us. An engineer replies within 24 hours to notes sent by WhatsApp or the contact form. We manufacture valve cleaners, lubricants and non-hardening sealants in-house. Each clause in your specification maps onto a real product choice.
You can request the product guide through an enquiry, and an engineer will send it. If the valve details point to severe damage, we will say so. The next step may be a proper assessment, or sometimes replacement, rather than a sealant.
We bring more than 30 years of online valve maintenance experience to every enquiry. Browse the valve sealants range while you draft the note.
Sealant specification wording questions, answered directly
What should a valve sealant specification include?
It should state the role, the service medium, the temperature range, the seat materials, the injection system, any non-hardening requirement and the packaging. Written this way, it lets a supplier match a product to the valve instead of guessing.
Why specify a non-hardening valve sealant?
Organic sealants can harden in dry gas and seize valves. A non-hardening clause matters where the service is dry gas, or where the valve may stay closed for long periods. It keeps the seat seal effective and the valve free to move.
Should a sealant specification name a product code?
Naming one code as a reference is fine if that product has worked before. Writing it as a strict requirement can block equal or better options. Describe the duty in plain words, then let the supplier propose the matching product.
What temperature details should I send with a sealant enquiry?
Send the normal operating band and the highest and lowest temperatures the valve sees, with units. Mention short excursions such as startup or regeneration. These details set the service envelope the sealant must survive.
