Fertiliser and ammonia plants: compatibility-led valve care

In ammonia service, the media itself limits which valve sealants can be used.

The short answer

An ammonia valve sealant must resist the media itself: ammonia attacks copper-bearing alloys, swells many elastomers, and organic sealants can harden in dry gas. It must also tolerate whatever product already sits in the valve. Choose a non-hardening compound with documented ammonia resistance, inject it in controlled amounts within fitting ratings, and confirm the seat with an agreed leak test.

1. What makes ammonia service different

Ammonia plants make ammonia, then turn much of it into urea and other fertiliser products. Each area brings its own media: synthesis gas, liquid ammonia refrigerant, carbon dioxide streams and carbamate solutions. Valve care starts with the media, not the valve.

Anhydrous ammonia is dry and an effective solvent. It attacks copper, brass and other copper-bearing alloys, and it can crack those alloys when traces of water and stress combine. It also swells several common elastomers, so soft seats and packings need evidence rather than assumption.

That is why compatibility, not convenience, drives sealant selection here. A compound that performs well in hydrocarbon service may soften, wash out or harden in this plant.

2. Choosing a sealant for ammonia service

Ask three questions of any candidate sealant. Has the manufacturer documented resistance to ammonia at conditions like yours? Does the compound tolerate what is already inside the valve, including products injected years ago? Does it suit the duty, whether dry synthesis gas, liquid ammonia or wet carbamate?

Dry gas matters more than it looks. Industry knowledge holds that organic sealants can harden in dry gas and seize valves, and much of an ammonia plant runs dry. Non-hardening sealants exist for exactly this reason, and we make them in-house.

Trade-offs remain between plant areas, because media change from unit to unit. General-purpose grease is not automatically a substitute either, as this grease and sealant comparison explains. Build the choice on valve sealant compatibility evidence, then review our valve sealants range.

3. Gates to clear before injection

Online treatment works only when the valve allows it. Not every valve can be treated in service, and that is worth saying plainly.

Clear these gates first:

  1. The valve has injection fittings, and they are in good condition.
  2. The valve design and this service suit sealant injection.
  3. Site rules and the permit-to-work allow the job to proceed.
  4. OEM documentation, where it exists, has been read for limits and warranty terms.

Valves built with injection points are designed to be maintained this way. For the general method, see valve sealant injection. Where the gates cannot be cleared, plan the work for a shutdown window instead.

4. Injection in controlled amounts

Injection is a measured job, not a race to a pressure number. Introduce cleaner or sealant in small controlled amounts, within the ratings of your fittings and injection gun.

Watch the pressure response at every stage. Stop if pressure climbs without product movement, if a fitting weeps, or if the valve gets harder to operate.

Cleaners need dwell time to soften old product before sealant follows. Neglected valves take far longer than recently maintained ones, so judge by how the valve responds.

On stem fittings, keep injection pressures conservative. Buttonhead fittings have maker-specific limits, and the fitting rating always governs.

5. Judging the result honestly

An ammonia leak is often found by odour, a pressure rise, sound or bubbles at a vent. These are screening signs. They suggest a passing seat; they do not confirm one.

Confirm with a seat-leak test under agreed conditions. Pressure decay across the closed valve, double block and bleed monitoring, or a witnessed leak test all work when planned properly. API 598 and ISO 5208 remain factory acceptance references, not field results.

If seat damage is deep or the body leaks, the honest endpoint is an assessment or replacement, not another injection. Emergency isolation by body fill is a specialised and higher-risk procedure, performed by trained specialists, assessed case by case.

6. A routine that keeps valves reliable

Compatibility-led care works best as a routine, not a rescue. Cycle valves on a set schedule, because idle valves in clean, dry service still tend to seize. Top up lubricant and sealant on a planned cadence, and record which compound went into which valve.

Records matter here. They tell the next engineer what is already inside the valve, and that is half of the compatibility question.

We bring more than 30 years of online valve maintenance experience, with clean, lubricate and seal service and operator training available. To see what a full job includes, read about an online sealant injection visit.

Common questions

Ammonia valve sealants questions, answered directly

Can a leaking ammonia valve be sealed online?

Often, in suitable cases. The valve needs injection fittings in good condition, a design that suits injection, and permit cover. A compatible sealant is then injected in controlled amounts, and the seat is checked with an agreed leak test.

Does ammonia attack valve sealants?

Yes, in two ways. Ammonia is a strong solvent that softens or swells many compounds and elastomers, and in dry gas organic sealants can harden and seize valves. Ask for documented ammonia resistance, and prefer non-hardening types in dry service.

Which valve materials are unsuitable for ammonia?

Copper, brass and other copper-bearing alloys are the main risk, especially where traces of water are present. Zinc-bearing alloys also warrant caution. Elastomer seats vary by grade, so match each to ammonia service with evidence.

How do you confirm an ammonia valve has stopped passing?

Screening signs such as odour, pressure rise or bubbles only suggest a leak. Confirm with a seat-leak test under agreed conditions, for example pressure decay across the closed valve or double block and bleed monitoring, witnessed where the site requires.
